204th anniversary of death of Đorđe Petrović – Karađorđe marked
Today, the delegation representing the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces laid wreaths and paid tribute on the occasion of the 204th anniversary of the death of Đorđe Petrović-Karađorđe, the leader of the First Serbian Uprising, in St. George’s Church in Oplenac near Topola.
State Secretary at the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs, Miodrag Kapor, led the ceremony, and wreaths were laid by Assistant Minister of the Interior Željko Veselinović, Mayor of Topola Igor Petrović, representatives of the "Endowment of King Petar I", associations nurturing traditions of Serbian liberation wars and citizens.
Đorđe Petrović Karađorđe, the leader of the First Serbian Uprising, was killed in Radovanjski Lug near Velika Plana on July 25, 1817, and buried in a sarcophagus located in St. George’s Church in Oplenac.
