Lightning Strike 2021: land, naval and air forces in action
As part of the joint tactical live-fire exercise "Lightning Strike 2021", SAF units are carrying out intensive daytime and night-time activities on training grounds throughout the Republic of Serbia.
Earlier today, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović, PhD, said that tactical drills were underway at military training grounds across the country, as an introduction to the final joint exercise that would be held on 27 June in Pešter, by order of President Aleksandar Vučić. According to him, this exercise will perhaps be one of the largest military exercises conducted in Serbia in recent decades.
In this phase of the exercise, units of the Army, Air Force and Air Defence, the 72nd Special Operations Brigade and the 63rd Parachute Brigade are carrying out a wide range of tasks on land, water and in the air. Offensive, defensive, anti-terrorist and anti-insurgency operations are being carried out on Mount Rtanj, Pešter Plateau, Deliblato Sands, Tisza River near Titel and the "Pasuljanske livade", "Medja", "Orešac" and "Borovac" training grounds.
In one of the segments of the exercise, the 246th CBRN Battalion is carrying out intensive training activities in providing CBRN protection during the operation, in the region of Mount Rtanj.
During the exercise, members of the 246th CBRN Battalion are conducting a wide range of drills in providing CBRN protection to Army units. The purpose of the exercise is to practice and check the operation of the CBRN monitoring and lab stations, decontamination of motor and towing vehicles, weapons and personnel, as well as staff officers’ activities in the battalion command.
The CBRN monitoring station collects and analyzes available data on enemy action, while the lab station collects and processes samples to plan further course of action. Decontamination is carried out using the newly introduced M-09 decontamination platform, which has proven to be extremely effective in this type of tasks.
Actions are performed by SAF units of all branches, with the support of general and logistics services that provide uninterrupted communication, aerial surveillance and early warning, CBRN protection, transport, food, explosive ordnance, health care and military equipment maintenance.
The exercise uses tanks, combat vehicles, artillery systems and weapons, boats, aircraft, helicopters, remotely piloted aircraft, air defence systems, unmanned platforms and a wide range of infantry and special forces weapons.
The exercise aims to check the combat readiness of the Serbian forces and to improve the ability of SAF commands, units and institutions to respond to the national security challenges, risks and threats.
