212th anniversary of Battle of Čegar marked
A delegation representing the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces laid a wreath today at the Monument to Stevan Sinđelić, to mark the 212th anniversary of the Battle of Čegar.
State Secretary at the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Miodrag Kapor led the state ceremony and wreaths were laid at the memorial complex on Čegar Hill near Niš by representatives of the City of Niš, Pantelej Municipality, Serbian-Russian Humanitarian Centre, Sinđelić family and representatives of citizen associations committed to keeping alive the memory of fighters and victims of armed conflicts.
The Battle of Čegar, which took place on 31 May 1809, was one of the most tragic armed conflicts in the First Serbian Uprising. Despite heroic resistance, Serbian rebels led by Stevan Sinđelić were not able to achieve victory in this battle which marked the beginning of the end of the uprising in the Belgrade Pashaluk.
Fighting against a superior opponent, Serbian revolutionaries showed tremendous courage and patriotism which remained woven into the nation’s collective consciousness over the next two centuries.
