Representatives of the Military Health Department, Ministry of Defence, held a meeting via video conferencing today with representatives of the Ohio National Guard, the US Armed Forces, with the aim of exchanging experiences in infectious and tropical diseases with an emphasis on Covid-19.
According to the military doctors from the two countries, during the talks over the past period, they have had the opportunity to exchange experiences once a week regarding the challenges they face in health care when it comes to the coronavirus. Through dialogue, expert teams of doctors analyzed the similarities and differences in procedures and protocols for the control, prevention of spread, and treatment of Covid-19 which was an opportunity for them to gain new knowledge on how to fight the pandemic. The interlocutors also agree that it is important that experts have shown readiness to share experiences in the fight against the "invisible enemy".
Head of the Department for the Prevention and Control of Nosocomial Infections, Military Medical Academy, epidemiologist Prof. Vesna Šuljagić expressed satisfaction with the current cooperation with the Ohio National Guard’s medical personnel.
- This time, the topic of our conversation was Covid-19. Early last year, we didn’t know anything about it, we slowly developed procedures, we were learning. We got acquainted with the virus step by step experiencing numerous challenges. Through this cooperation and dialogue with our colleagues, we realized that they thought very similarly - Dr Šuljagić emphasized.
The cooperation, she added, was designed in the form of discussions in four groups - therapy groups consisting of anaesthesiologists, pulmonologists and infectious disease specialists, diagnostic groups consisting of microbiologists, radiologists and immunologists, psychosocial support groups that brought together psychiatrists, as well as a prevention group in which epidemiologists discussed topics in their area of expertise.
– Now we know much more than at the very beginning, but we must all work together on a global level to standardize everything we have learned so far - Dr Šuljagić emphasized, adding that military health was fighting Covid-19 on all fronts.
According to her, it is important that vaccination covers as much of our population as possible, in order to have a safer environment so that we can continue in all fields.
Speaking about the importance of cooperation and exchange of experiences among military doctors, Colonel Miroslav Broćić from the Military Health Department pointed out that cooperation with members of the Ohio National Guard had included numerous military medical cooperation activities.
– This cooperation has continued today, amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, which has affected the whole world, so these activities take place via teleconferences, but that does not prevent us from continuing to exchange our experiences and knowledge and to plan joint activities in the future - Colonel Broćić emphasized.
The participants were also greeted by the US Ambassador to Serbia, Anthony Godfrey, who pointed out the importance of cooperation between the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces and the Ohio National Guard, which had been nurtured for more than a decade, an important part of which was military medicine.
