Minister Stefanović meets with Spanish Minister of Defence
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović, PhD, met with the Minister of Defence of the Kingdom of Spain Margarita Robles in Madrid today.
Noting that the relations between Serbia and Spain were extremely close, Minister Stefanović pointed out that he had talked to Minister Robles about the development of cooperation in the field of defence, so that it would be a reflection of the relations between the two countries.
– We want the cooperation between the two ministries of defence to be closer and to match the quality of cooperation between our countries in the fields of economy and strategic issues, in which Spain provides support to Serbia, especially regarding Kosovo and Metohija - said Stefanović. He thanked Spain once again for its position of principle regarding the non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo.
He also highlighted the successful cooperation in the UN peacekeeping operations, citing United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon as an example of extremely good cooperation between the Serbian and Spanish contingents, and added that cooperation in the field of military industry was one of the important topics of conversation.
– We also visited “La Marañosa” Institute today, one of the Spanish Defence Ministry’s key institutions, where we discussed the possibilities of collaborating on the development of modern armaments, which would be used to equip our armed forces as well. Spain is more than willing to crown our cooperation with a memorandum of cooperation in the field of military industry, which we would sign this year. We expect Spanish representatives to come to our Arms Fair in October, which will also be a good opportunity to sign this type of agreement and agree on specific projects - Stefanović pointed out.
At the meeting, Minister Robles pointed out the importance of mutual support in the defence of sovereignty and compliance with the principles of international law, and reiterated Spain’s position of principle on the non-recognition of the so-called Kosovo.
She also pointed out the importance of joint participation in UNIFIL, which is of great importance for Spain, and speaking about the possibilities of improving cooperation in the field of defence, she conveyed Spain’s commitment to continue joint participation in multinational operations and promote closer military to military and military-economic cooperation.
Minister Stefanović also met with the Spanish National Armament Director, Admiral Santiago Ramón González Gómez.
– I am satisfied with the visit so far and I would like to thank the Minister and the Armament Director, who was one of our hosts and who allowed us to see the capabilities of the Spanish military industry, as well as the projects in the field of missile weapons and other areas that we can collaborate on with the Spaniards - said Stefanović.
