Wreaths laid to mark Victory over Fascism Day

Delegations representing the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces laid wreaths at the Monument to the Liberators of Belgrade in the Second World War, the Monument to the Soviet Soldier at the Liberators of Belgrade Cemetery and the Monument to Soviet Veterans on Mount Avala to mark the Second World War Victory over Fascism Day - May 9.

1,395 soldiers of the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia and 818 members of the Red Army, who gave their lives fighting together for the liberation of Belgrade, are buried in the Second World War Liberators of Belgrade Cemetery.

Victory Day commemorates the day when the victory over fascism was won 76 years ago in the Second World War, and it is an opportunity to pay tribute to all the heroes of the fight for freedom.

On the occasion of Victory Day, tribute was also paid to the heroes of Soviet Russia who tragically died in 1964, coming to mark the twentieth anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade, in whose honour the Monument to Soviet Veterans was erected on Mount Avala.

After a six-year armed conflict that began with Nazi Germany's attack on Poland on 1 September 1939, the Second World War in Europe ended on 9 May 1945 when the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany’s armed forces came into effect.
