Minister Stefanović meets with newly appointed Ambassador of Canada, H.E. Mr Norman

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović, PhD, talked today to the newly appointed Ambassador of Canada to Serbia, Mr. Giles Norman, about defence issues of strategic importance, which also contribute to the improvement of overall relations between the two countries.
Stefanović said that Serbia was trying to strengthen all forms of cooperation with Canada, given its international influence, the size of the Serbian diaspora in Canada, as well as Canada’s development aid and investment in Serbia so far.

According to the Minister of Defence, the Republic of Serbia continues to pursue a balanced defence policy and to constantly work on improving and strengthening relations with all countries and international organisations, in accordance with its long-term strategic commitment to maintaining its neutral status.

They agreed that there was room for further improvement of cooperation between the two countries in the area of civil-military cooperation and military education for Serbian and Canadian service members in military educational institutions in Serbia and Canada.

Stefanović thanked the ambassador for Canada's participation in KFOR, emphasizing that KFOR was responsible for maintaining peace and security in Kosovo and Metohija, and that it was the only partner of the Serbian Armed Forces in guarding the administrative line, which gave the local population a sense of security. He also expressed concern over the arming of paramilitaries in Pristina.

Ambassador Giles Norman expressed his belief that Serbia and Canada would raise cooperation in the field of defence and other areas of common interest to a higher level.
