First World War Armistice Day marked



A delegation of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, led by Brigadier General Savo Iriškić, laid a wreath today at the Memorial Ossuary to Belgrade Defenders at the New Cemetery as part of the central state ceremony commemorating the First World War Armistice Day.
The Delegation of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces also laid wreaths at the French Military Cemetery and the Memorial Ossuary to Russian soldiers killed in the First World War.

At the state ceremony, wreaths were laid at the Memorial Ossuary to Belgrade Defenders at the New Cemetery by the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ivica Dačić, Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs, Dr Darija Kisić Tepavčević, the Mayor of Belgrade Zoran Radojičić, representatives of the diplomatic and military-diplomatic corps and associations for nurturing the traditions of Serbian liberation wars. Wreaths were also laid at the French Military Cemetery and the Memorial Ossuary to Russian soldiers killed in the First World War.
On this day in 1918, at 11 o’clock, after four years of bloodshed, the fighting of the Great War ended. In honour of millions of innocent victims, every year on 11 November, at exactly 11 a.m, events are held around the world to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers, officers and civilians. The Memorial Ossuary to Belgrade Defenders testifies to the heroism and suffering of Serbian soldiers in the Great War.
