New Government of the Republic of Serbia elected
At today’s session of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, a new government was elected, and Ana Brnabić was elected Prime Minister.
Nebojša Stefanović was elected Minister of Defence, and the former Minister, Aleksandar Vulin, was elected Minister of the Interior.
At the start of today’s session, the Prime Minister and PM-designate Ana Brnabić presented to Members of Parliament the programme of the new government as well as members of the Cabinet.
She said that the government will have six key goals: further fight against Covid-19, preservation of interests of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija, the fight against crime and mafia, preservation of Serbia’s independence and independent decision-making, the rule of law and economic strengthening of Serbia.
Presenting the outline of the new government's agenda, the Prime Minister Designate Brnabić also spoke about the commitments of the security and defence policy, laid out in the main strategic documents – the National Security Strategy and the Defence Strategy, which are the basis for further improvement and strengthening of the national security and defence systems of the Republic of Serbia.
- In accordance with its decision to be neutral, the Republic of Serbia is determined to strengthen its defence capabilities and develop its defence industry, efficient and economically sustainable defence system and professional and efficient armed forces. We will continue investing in this and working hard. Despite all the challenges, we must keep the peace, at almost any cost. Peace and stability are a prerequisite for preserving everything we have created and the implementation of all other plans that will further strengthen our country - said Ana Brnabić.
After the discussion, the session of the National Assembly ended with the election of the new government and the Prime Minister and new ministers’ swearing-in ceremony.
The Serbian government has 21 ministries, including three new ones – the Ministry of Village Care, the Ministry of Family Welfare and Demography and the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue, as well as two ministers without portfolio.
