The Day of Remembrance of Serbian and Greek soldiers who died in the First World War

The Delegation of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces led by Brigadier General Željko Tramošljika laid wreaths today in remembrance of the Greek and Serbian soldiers who died in the First World War. Wreaths were laid within the complex of the First World War Greek military cemetery in Pirot and at the Memorial to Serbian soldiers who died in the First World War.
Wreaths were laid by the representatives of the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs, the Pirot District Chief, the representatives of the Cities of Pirot and Niš, the representatives of the embassies of the Hellenic Republic and the Republic of Cyprus, and the associations and citizens committed to nurturing the traditions of Serbian liberation wars.

The only First World War Greek military cemetery in Serbia is situated on the Metljavica hill near Pirot. Remains of 358 Greek soldiers and officers who died in the severe winter at the end of 1918 and the beginning of 1919 are buried at the cemetery. Their bones had been scattered around Pirot until 1923, when Katerina Levandis, who was married to a Serbian soldier from Pirot, collected their remains and buried them in tombs. Most of the fallen Greeks buried on Metljavica were from Patras, Peloponnese. In the immediate vicinity of the cemetery, there is a monument dedicated to 7,610 people from Pirot who also died in the First World War.
