Commemoration of the death of retired General of the Army Dragoljub Ojdanić
A ceremony was held today at the Guard’s Club in Topčider to commemorate the death of retired General of the Army Dragoljub Ojdanić.
Head of the Department for Tradition, Standard and Veterans, Colonel Duško Šljivančanin spoke about the life of General Ojdanić saying that in the course of his military career, General Ojdanić was the Užice Corps Commander (1992-1993), the Chief of Staff of the First Army (1993-1994), the First Army Commander (1994-1996), that he became the Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Yugoslav Army in 1996, and from 1998 to 2000 he was the Chief of the General Staff of the Yugoslav Army, and then the Minister of Defence of the FRY.
- He dedicated his entire career and knowledge to the army, he made an immense contribution to the development of the armed forces and the defence system as witnessed by numerous awards and decorations that he received, among which are the highest national and military decorations: Order of the People’s Army, Order of Merits for the People, Order of Brotherhood and Unity, Order of Military Merits – Colonel Šljivančanin pointed out.
Retired Generals Radovan Tomanović, Ljubomir Bajić, Branko Krga and the Chairman of the City Assembly of Užice, Branislav Mitrović, also bade farewell to General Ojdanić.
Symbolically, at the request of the family of the late General Ojdanić, actress Ivana Žigon recited "Prkosna pesma" (Defiant Poem) by Dobrica Erić at the end of the commemoration.
Dragoljub Ojdanić was born in 1941 in the village of Ravni near Užice. He graduated from the Army Military Academy (Infantry Department) in 1964, and completed Command and Staff Academy in 1975. He completed his postgraduate studies in the Arts of Warfare in 1985 and obtained master’s degree.
He served in Sarajevo, Đakovica, Prizren, Priština, Užice and Belgrade.
In 1999, he was promoted to the rank of General of the Army based on war merit and he was awarded the Order of Freedom, the highest military decoration which was awarded for extraordinary success in leading and commanding military units.
His active military service ended in 2000.
General Ojdanić’s funeral will be held in his native village of Ravni near Užice, on Sunday 13th September, at 2 p.m.
