Minister Vulin: The Dog Training Centre is far more developed than in previous years

- Every segment of the Serbian Armed Forces deserves equal attention and respect because there are reasons for its existence. The Dog Training Centre is also a very important part of our armed forces, service dogs make our soldiers’ lives easier, but also save lives. In all segments of our Armed Forces there are parts where service dogs are very important - the Minister of Defence, Aleksandar Vulin, pointed out today after visiting the training at the Dog Training Centre in the "Knjaz Mihailo" barracks in Niš.

According to him, the Dog Training Centre is far more developed now than in previous years.

- The action strength has been increased, the number of jobs has been increased, and the procurement of new equipment, new vehicles and dogs has been made possible. The Serbian Armed Forces take care of every segment of their work and, no matter what they do, they make sure that they are best equipped, best trained and that they can respond to all tasks - Minister Vulin emphasized and added that the Dog Training Centre has its place and that every segment of our armed forces will be equally strengthened and improved.

According to the Commander of the Dog Training Centre, Major Zdenko Cvijetić, the level of training of dogs and dog handlers, i.e. members who are undergoing training, was demonstrated today, and he pointed out that three training courses are in progress.

- These are the courses for dog handlers and guard dogs – dog retraining and one of the most complex forms of training – Training Course for Dog Handlers and Dogs for Special Operations - said Major Cvijetić and added that new plans and projects were presented today for the improvement of current capabilities and the development of new ones.

He pointed out that dog handlers in training are motivated for work and that they love dogs, although it is a “very demanding training”. Also, Major Cvijetić pointed out the importance of forming the Dog Training Centre, because it will be able to engage in its main activity much more successfully than the Company for Dog Handler Training and Dog Breeding and Training could.

Training instructor, Sergeant First Class Dejan Veličković, pointed out that several types of training of service dogs were shown today.

- What we saw today was the basic pre-training of seven-month-old puppies, the training that lasts from 30 days to six months, obedience drills, obstacle course training, search dogs detecting explosives and explosive devices and protection/attack dogs in action. In order to be a dog handler, one must love animals, primarily dogs, and the reason for that is a very complex and demanding training – emphasized Sergeant First Class Veličković.

The Dog Training Centre was also visited by the Chief of Staff of the Training Command, Colonel Nikola Dejanović and the Deputy Commander of the Logistics Training Centre, Lieutenant Colonel Milan Terzić.
