Minister Vulin’s meeting with General Vitale

Minister of Defence Aleksandar Vulin met today with the newly appointed Chief of NATO Military Liaison Belgrade, Brigadier General Tomasso Vitale.

At the beginning of the meeting, Minister Vulin wished General Vitale success in his new post.

Minister Vulin pointed out that Serbia is a military neutral country and that cooperation with NATO under the auspices of the Partnership for Peace Programme is an ideal framework.

Forming the so-called Armed Forces of Kosovo and the introduction of obligatory military service in Kosovo and Metohija is absolutely unacceptable for Serbia. Resolution 1244 clearly states that KFOR is the only legitimate armed formation in Kosovo and Metohija, and there can be no exception to that. In addition to that, Minister Vulin added, KFOR is the only guarantor of security on the territory of Kosovo and Metohija and Serbia strongly opposes to the reduction in the number of KFOR members. Minister Vulin especially thanked the Italian KFOR for its role in protecting the Dečani Monastery during the 2004 “March Pogrom”.

General Vitale pointed out that NATO respects the military neutrality of Serbia and said that there will be no reduction in the number of KFOR troops deployed in Kosovo and Metohija.
