85 years since the death of King Aleksandar Karađorđević marked
The anniversary of the death of King Aleksandar I Karađorđević was marked today by a series of events.
Minister of Labor, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs Zoran Đorđević, in his capacity of the envoy of the President of the Republic of Serbia and Supreme Commander of the Serbian Armed Forces, attended today the commemoration of the 85th Anniversary of the assassination of King Aleksandar in Marseille, accompanied by the Head of Organization Department of the Defense Policy Sector, Major General Slađan Đorđević laid a wreath at the Monument of French-Serbian Friendship.

In honor of King Aleksandar, a liturgy was held at the Greek Church “Dormition”, and with the French Secretary of State to the Ministry of the Armed Forces, Geneviève Darrieussecq, a delegation from Serbia laid flowers on a commemorative plaque, where King Aleksandar and the then French Foreign Minister, Louis Barthou were killed.
A delegation of the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Armed Forces, representatives of local self-government and citizens’ associations committed to nurturing and upholding the traditions of Serbian liberation wars, laid wreaths at King Aleksandar’s sarcophagus at St. George’s Church at a state ceremony held at Oplenac near Topola. The ceremony was led by Secretary at the Ministry of Labor, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs, Zoran Antić.
King Aleksandar I Karađorđević, Commander-in-Chief of the Serbian Army in World War I, was killed in the French city of Marseille on 9 October 1934, and was buried in a sarcophagus located at St. George’s Church at Oplenac near Topola.
