Marking 159 anniversary of Miloš Obrenović’s death

A delegation of the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Armed Forces laid a wreath today at the Cathedral Church (Saborna crkva) in Belgrade marking 159th anniversary of the death of Prince Miloš Obrenović.

State Secretary with the Ministry of Labor, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs, Nenad Nerić led the ceremony of laying the wreaths and paying homage.
The commemorative ceremony was organized by the Government Committee for Preserving the Traditions of the Serbian Liberation Wars, and wreaths were laid by representatives of associations and citizens committed to nurturing and upholding the traditions of the Serbian liberation wars.

Prince Miloš Obrenović (ruled from 1815 to 1839 and from 1858 to 1860) was one of the most significant modern rulers of Serbia. He was the leader of the Second Serbian Uprising appointed at Palm Sunday (“Cveti”) on 23April 1815 in Takovo near Gornji Milanovac.

The reign of Prince Miloš Obrenović was marked by the gradual establishment of autonomy of the Belgrade Paschaluk within the Ottoman Empire, as well as introduction of hegemony and clashes with political opponents. He was a strong opponent of the adoption of a Constitution that would limit his then absolute power in Serbia. After the adoption of the Constitution of Sretenje (Candlemass) in 1835, the internal political crisis in Serbia began to intensify, culminating in the 1838 proclamation of the so-called Turkish Constitution and abdication of Prince Miloš in 1839.

After the overthrow of Prince Aleksandar Karađorđević, Prince Miloš found himself on the Serbian throne for the second time, from 1858 until his death on 26 September 1860.
