New Issue of “ODBRANA”

In the latest issue of magazine “Odbrana”, we attach special attention to the success achieved by representatives of the Serbian Armed Forces at this year’s International Military Games in Russia, held in ten countries, on 21 training areas. Our representatives competed in three events – “Military Rally”, “Tank Biathlon” and “Sniper Frontier”. Among our representatives, Corporal Ivan Obrenović achieved the best result by winning the gold medal in firing from a sniper rifle, while the competitors in “Military Rally”, who won the third place, together with the team from Belarus, were just one step behind. Following success in races in semi-finals, our tankmen won respectable eighth place in the finals in the competition of 23 teams. At National Culture Festival, organised during the International Military Games, representatives of the Artistic Ensemble “Stanislav Binički” participated in the category of instrumental compositions where they won the second place.

On the occasion of marking the 180th anniversary of establishment of the medical service, we have given deserved attention to immeasurable efforts of hundreds and thousands of dedicated military medical servicemen, who, generation after generation, saved lives of fearless warriors and combatants of Serbian military at fronts all over the Balkans, and everywhere where they defended the freedom and honour of the Serbian people. We have not forgotten the selfless help from the friends and allies from numerous countries. After all those temptations, recorded and experienced in the last two centuries, particularly in the times of war and devastating typhoid in 1915, today, Serbian military medical service is respected in the world because of its multidisciplinary approach and high level of expertise in all branches of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and veterinarian science, while complex surgical procedures and latest methods of treatment were and have remained its distinguishing mark.

After almost three decades of neglect and planned incapacitation of the young to defend their country and act efficiently in circumstances of undermined security, this year as well, the pupils of final grades at high schools in Serbia will have an opportunity at elective lessons with class masters to systematically gain new basic knowledge about defence system. It has already been proven that during the lessons on defence and protection, the students develop sense of belonging to the state and they influence the creation of a safer society that cherishes tradition and true values. The efforts of the armed forces not to allow that future generations remain “illiterate” when it comes to those important areas of our everyday life certainly deserve some room in the magazine “Odbrana”.

On the occasion of the Aviation Day we bring you a story of Brigadier General Željko Bilić, the first man of the Branch Council, who points out that technically most complex and most demanding branch of every armed force, and of ours as well, spreads its wings again after many years. The decision to acquire planes MiG-29s was well timed, multiply significant and useful. Now we have a squadron of MiG-29 planes, overhauled, soon to be modernised and armed with the state-of-the-art air arms. A squadron of fighter planes equipped in such a manner is capable of executing its most important task 24 hours, 365 days in the year, and that task is to protect the air space above Serbia.

We asked the answer to the question why the Agreement on destruction of middle and long range missiles was abandoned. Miloje Nešić, a producer of a shocking film “Live Experiment” explains to us the extent to which our country is jeopardised by the effects of NATO bombardment, and he points out that in its flybys over Serbia and Monte Negro, NATO expended the amount of oxygen that would be used by all living creatures in Serbia in the period of 50 years. We talk about 350,000 tons of kerosene, while additional 150,000 tons were burnt during targeting oil refineries and civilian fuel storages which all together amounts to 500,000 tons.

Professor Aleksandar Životić PhD proves that Serbian soldiers were the true heroes of the Great War, and he underlines that at the time more than 90 per cent of male population eligible for military service were mobilised from some parts of our country. The sacrifice that the Serbian people left at the altar of freedom over those four years is disproportionate, not only to the entire population of the nation, but to other nations as well, that participated in the First World War.

In the segment entitled Culture, we bring you an interview with Nenad Janković. Dr Nele Karajlić warns us that oblivion is in fact “a cure for shame”, and that conscience often does not leave us at peace, even when we give an impression of peacefulness. Much has changed, and much is yet to change, but the price of our (non)-acting always comes due.

At the end, this issue of “Odbrana” brings you in no less than 12 pages, competitions and announcements for a great number of new working places in defence system.
