Marking the 74th Anniversary of the Liberation of Belgrade in the Second World War
Today, a delegation of the Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces laid wreaths at the Cemetery of the Liberators of Belgrade and at the Monument to a Soviet Soldier, on the occasion of marking the 74th anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade in the Second World War.
The state ceremony was led by Minister for Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Zoran Đorđević.
As the anthems of the Republic of Serbia and Russian Federation were played, the wreaths were also laid by representatives of the city of Belgrade, SUBNOR of Serbia, and representatives of the embassies of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Azerbaijan in Serbia.
In the continuation of the programme of observing the anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade in the Second World War, the delegation of the Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces laid a wreath at the Monument to fallen Soviet pilots on Avala.
After several days of exhausting fights, the members of the People’s Liberation Army of Yugoslavia, supported by the forces of the Red Army, liberated the capital of Yugoslavia on 20th October 1944 thus ending a four-year long period of occupation during which perished a great number of Belgrade citizens, while the city suffered great devastation.
