Commemoration of the 212th Anniversary of the Battle of Deligrad

Today, in the courtyard of the Church of Holy Archangels Mihajlo and Gavrilo in Deligrad, not far from Aleksinac, a commemoration was held of the 212th anniversary of the Battle of Deligrad which was led between Serbian uprising military led by Karađorđe and Turkish armed forces.

On behalf of the Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces, the wreaths were laid by a delegation led by Commander of the Mixed Artillery Brigade Colonel Novica Petrović. The commemoration was attended by a delegation of the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs, representatives of the municipality of Aleksinac and associations which cherish the traditions of liberation wars of Serbia.

The battle of Deligrad was remembered as an example of tactically successfully led battle of the Serbian forces against the enemy that was superior in numbers.  The battle for Deligrad started on 3rd September 1806 by a strong frontal assault of the Turks, but in fierce battles, which lasted the entire day, the Serbs, though significantly inferior in numbers, managed to defend Deligrad.

On the place where stood the main line of Serbian defence, a memorial church of Saint Archangels Mihajlo and Gavrilo was erected in memory of the Serbian warriors fallen in all liberation wars of Serbia until 1918.
