Marking the 97th anniversary of death of King Peter the First
A delegation of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces has laid today a wreath at the sarcophagus in the church of St. George at Oplenac, at a commemorative gathering marking the 97th anniversary of the death of King Peter the First.
With military and state honours, wreaths were also laid by Negovan Stanković, state secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs, who led the state ceremony, representatives of the Municipality of Topola, and citizens' associations dedicated to cherishing the traditions of the Serbian liberation wars.
The organiser of the state commemorative ceremony is the Committee of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for preserving traditions of Serbian liberation wars.
King Peter the First Liberator is one of the most important Serbian rulers of the new age. The rule of Peter the First was marked by an annexation crisis, the so-called Customs War with the Austro-Hungarian Empire, as well as the Balkan and the First World War, from which Serbia, after major victories in Kumanovo, Bregalnica, Cer, Kolubara and the Thessaloniki front and major human victims, brought its statehood into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. King Peter the First died in Belgrade, on 16th August 1921.
