Marking 73rd anniversary of the Syrmian Front breakthrough

By laying wreaths and giving state and military honours, a state ceremony was held today in Adaševci near Šid on the occasion of marking the 73rd anniversary of the Syrmian Front breakthrough.

The State Secretary at the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, Negovan Stanković, led the ceremony, and on that occasion, the wreath was laid by representatives of the Serbian Armed Forces.

Stanković pointed out that Serbia has always been on the right side, and so it was in the Second World War, just fighting the ideology of Nazism and Fascism, and said that we must follow the path of our ancestors by preserving our independence in peace, strengthening the economy, the army and the culture.

He recalled that the hard-fought and bloody battles, in snow and wind, took 175 days in all, from 21st October 1944 until 12th April 1945, in which more than 14,000 Yugoslav soldiers and 1,100 members of the Red Army were killed, and that the Syrmian Front breakthrough also marked the end of the Second World War in the Serbian territory. The State Secretary also pointed out that due to their sacrifice, we remained free and proud out of all the bloc divisions of Cold War discord.

Besides the representatives of the Government and the Serbian Armed Forces, the ceremony was attended by surviving veterans of this great battle, the diplomatic representatives of the countries whose troops participated in the Syrmian Front battles, representatives of the Municipality of Šid, the Alliance of Associations of the National Liberation War Veterans of Serbia (SUBNOR), the Association for cherishing the tradition of Serbian liberation wars and citizens.
