Day of Strategic Research Institute and Day of Military Archive Observed
Today, in barracks “Banjica 2” in Belgrade, 5th February – Day of the Strategic Research Institute and Day of the Military Archive was officially observed.
Congratulating the holiday to the members of the two institutions, Dean of the University of Defence Major General Mladen Vuruna pointed out that it had been the first year that the Strategic Research Institute was in the new environment, more precisely in the university of defence, shoulder to shoulder with the Military Academy, National Defence School, MMA Medical Faculty and the Scientific Information Institute.
- The Strategic Research Institute is now where it should be, in a place of both the heart and brain of educational and scientific thought which deals with the issues of security and defence – the Dean of the University of Defence said adding that the results of the small collective like the Institute were visible every year.
He expressed his belief that in the new environment, the Strategic Research Institute would receive a stimulus for new activities and tasks, stressing that the organisational units that made the University of Defence were expected to give their contribution to development of the armed forces organisation, development of commanding and planning and execution of the operations of the Armed Forces of Serbia which stem from the missions and assigned tasks.
Speaking about the most significant results of the previous period, Director of the Strategic Research Institute Jovanka Šaranović underlined that the project “Asymmetric forms of security threats” was in its final stage and that an international conference titled “Asymmetry and Strategy” was organised last year within that project in collaboration with the National Defence School. Apart from that, other projects were launched “Strategic culture as a determinant of national security policy in the function of affirmation and concept of military neutrality”, “Adaptation in the context of working and operational interest”, “Hybrid warfare”, and a macroproject “History of Serbian and Yugoslav armed forces in 19th and 20th century”.
- We held a series of lectures to mark the jubilee of 100 years since the First World War. Lieutenant Colonel Dalibor Denda held lectures from Novi Sad, to Pančevo, Čačak and even to Vranje, and the experiences from the terrain have showed that it is a very good model. Also, we are recognised by the journal Military-historical Gazette, which belongs to high category and which is issued twice a year – she said and added that many publications had been promoted in the previous year.
Director Šaranović underscored that, in previous 365 days, the institution that she headed had signed several international agreements on cooperation and hosted a number of delegations from similar institutions worldwide. Speaking about the plans for the future, she pointed out that in that year Institute would have three large conferences, and she said that the greatest challenge was the process of reaccreditation and finding an adequate facility in order to expand the Military Archive and equip it according to the standards stipulated by archival profession of developed European countries.
The celebration was attended by State Secretary in the Ministry of Defence Aleksandar Živković, AF and AD Commander Major General Ranko Živak, Head of the Military Academy Colonel Miroslav Talijan, former directors of the Institute, representatives of scientific, cultural and educational institutions, former and present employees and numerous guests.
The Strategic Research Institute was founded in 1984 in the process of transformation of the YPA Centre of High Military Schools “Maršal Tito“ and the YPA Centre for Strategic Research of the General Staff into a new integral scientific and educational institution. It underwent three phases of development: the first in the period 1985-1990, within the Armed forces centre for strategic research and studies“Maršal Tito”, the second after 1992 until its transformation into the Institute for the Skill of War, and the third phase, since 2006 when it was reformed and renamed into the Strategic Research Institute. The Strategic Research Institute, which functionally and organisationally makes part of the University of Defence, today consists of Division for Strategic Analysis and Security Integration, Division for Defence Studies, Military History Division, General Affairs Group and the Military Archive.
