Strengthening strategic cooperation with Algeria
Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin met today with Ambassador of Algeria Abdelhamid Chebchoub.
Vulin and Chebchoub agreed that there is a strong interest in further strengthening of the strategic cooperation of the two countries in the field of defence, since the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Serbia was chosen as a strategic partner in the reconstruction and modernization of the Algerian defence industry.
Apart from military-economic cooperation, the interlocutors emphasized the importance of cooperation in the field of military education. So far, about 90 Algerians have completed various forms of education in Serbian military education institutions, and at the moment there are 20 members of the Algerian ministry and the military at the specialist studies at the Military Medical Academy and the Military Academy.
Minister Vulin and Ambassador Chebchoub have assessed the work of the Mixed Committee for Cooperation in the field of defence, which periodically meets and specifies joint activities, as a very useful mechanism for improving the cooperation. The 6th session of the Mixed Committee for Defence Cooperation is scheduled to be held in Belgrade in the fourth quarter of 2017.
Minister Vulin and the Algerian Ambassador have also discussed the forthcoming meeting of the intergovernmental Mixed Committee for Economic and Scientific Technical Cooperation, which should open new chapters in relations between the two countries, regarding the defence cooperation as well, among other things.
The Minister of Defence told the Algerian Ambassador that Serbia highly appreciates Algeria's principled support to our legitimate efforts to preserve sovereignty and territorial integrity in Kosovo and Metohija and thanked him for the congratulations on his appointment as the Minister of Defence. Also, Minister Vulin asked Ambassador Chebchoub that Algeria votes against the so-called Kosovo in UNESCO at the forthcoming General Conference of that organization.
