Observed 76th Anniversary of the Crimes against Civilians on Terazije
On the occasion of commemorating the 76th anniversary of the crimes committed against civilians by occupation forces in the Second World War, Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs in the Government of the Republic of Serbia Zoran Đorđević laid a wreath today at the monument for the patriots hanged on Terazije square.
State Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Negovan Stanković said that the Government of Serbia was absolutely dedicated to the dignified memory of all the participants and events from its history.
Stanković said that they observed the day when German occupation authorities in the Second World War hanged on light posts five citizens of Belgrade accused of putting up resistance.
The period of the Second World War was marked by mass crimes against civilian population. In a string of tragic events that happened in the occupied Serbia of that time, the crime committed on Belgrade square Terazije on 17th August 1941 particularly stood out by effects that it had.
On that day, the German occupation authorities hanged on light posts five citizens of Belgrade accused of putting up resistance.
In 1983, in the memory of the five fellow citizens tragically killed on 17th August 1941, the city of Belgrade erected a monument dedicated to the hanged patriots on Terazije square, in direct vicinity of Igumanov Palace.
