Marked Anniversary of the Death of King Petar Karađorđević I
On Wednesday, 16th August a commemoration ceremony was held in St. George’s Church on Oplenac near Topola on the occasion of 96th anniversary of the death of King Petar Karađorđević I.
Wreaths were laid at the grave of the ruler by representatives of the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs, local government, King Peter’s Foundation, Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces and tradition cherishing associations and citizens.
King Petar Karađorđević I was born in 1844 as the fifth child of Prince Aleksander and Princess Persida, the daughter of Duke Jevrem Nenadović. His grandfather was the Grand Leader of the First Serbian Uprising, Karađorđe.
In the summer 1883, in Cetinje, he married Princess Ljubica Zorka, the oldest daughter of the Prince of Montenegro Nikola. According to the sources, on 28th May 1903 the Army carried out a coup d’état and proclaimed Prince Petar Karađorđević the King of Serbia which was confirmed by the National Assembly on 15th June.
King Petar I died in Belgrade on 16th August 1921, and was buried on 21st August of the same year in St. George’s Church in Oplenac.
