Marking the Battle of Čegar Anniversary

An anniversary of the battle on the hill of Čegar near Niš, where over 208 years ago Serbs fought against Turks, was marked by laying wreaths at the monument of Warlord Stevan Sinđelić and by paying homage to the fallen warriors of the First Serbian Uprising.

The wreaths were laid at the memorial by a delegation of the Serbian Armed Forces consisting of Commander of 3rd Army Brigade, Colonel Predrag Grbić, Mixed Artillery Brigade Commander, Colonel Zvonko Stojković and Lieutenant Colonel Slađan Hristov from Army Command. The wreaths were also laid by Assistant Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Milan Popović, Major or Niš, Darko Bulatović, the President of municipality Pantelej, Bata Stojanović, Association for Preserving the Traditions of the Serbian Liberation Wars and numerous other guests.

The Battle of Čegar was waged on 31st May 1809, and it remained remembered for the feat of Resava Warlord Stevan Sinđelić who, seeing that he was losing the battle against Turks that were superior in numbers, shot from his flintlock into gunpowder storage leading to death 6000 Turkish soldiers along with 3000 of his Serbian comrades.

After the battle, in retribution, the Turks built Ćele-tower at the entrance of then Niš and built in the tower 952 heads of Serbian rebels. This tower is a symbol of defiance and suffering of our people of those times.
