Preservation of peace and common sense
“We have to sincerely devote ourselves to the preservation of peace and common sense, in order not to have wars and senseless suffering of innocent people, like the Holocaust, again”, the Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic said today at the ceremony marking the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Within the state ceremony marking 27th January, Nikolic laid a wreath at the monument to the Holocaust victims at Staro Sajmiste in Belgrade.
“The place we are standing today, where the camp for Serbs, Jews and Roma used to be, should be the eternal memorial to the heroic victims of the monstrous ideology”, Nikolic emphasized.
He announced that he would support the establishment of the institution of the Memorial which would include the existing Museum of the Victims of Genocide.
“The way we cherish memory is very important because it not only affects the community, which cherishes it, but it also gives a picture of ourselves, our ancestors and the past”, Nikolic said.
Nikolic has conveyed a message that Serbia wants cooperation and establishment of friendship with all states and nations.
The state ceremony marking the International Holocaust Remembrance Day was attended by the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic, the Minister of Labour and Social Policy Aleksandar Vulin and the Speaker of Belgrade Assembly Nikola Nikodijevic.
The ceremony was also attended by the EU Ambassador Michael Davenport, the UK Ambassador Denis Keefe, the German Ambassador Axel Dittmann and other foreign diplomats.
