Improvement of cooperation with Belarus

Defence Minister Zoran Đorđević met the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces and First Deputy Defence Minister of the Republic of Belarus Major General Oleg Alekseevich Belokonev. The meeting was attended by Serbian Armed Forces Chief of General Staff General Ljubiša Diković and the Ambassador of Belarus Vladimir Cusev.

At the meeting a conclusion was drawn that development of cooperation so far is satisfactory, but there is space for further improvement. Besides the continuation of dialogue at the highest level, having in mind the successful conduct of multinational military exercise “Slavic Brotherhood 2016”, there was a proposal to continue military-military cooperation between two armies through joint exercises and training for multinational operations.

It is possible to upgrade military-economic cooperation through research and development, overhaul and procurement of spare parts for weaponry and military equipment used in Serbian Armed Forces, as well as establishing military-educational and military-medical collaboration.

During the meeting there was discussion about current security situation including the problem of migrant crisis. Therefore, Minister Đorđević emphasized that it is a sensitive issue for leadership of the Balkan countries bearing in mind that it is a challenge not only from security aspect but financial, as well.

Defence Minister stressed that in solving all open questions Serbia strives to act in compliance with its peaceful policy. In this respect, he thanked Belarus for the support to the preservation of territorial integrity and sovereignty of Serbia.
