Minister of Defence meets Head of UNDP Office in Serbia
Defence Minister Zoran Djordjevic and Irena Vojáčková-Sollorano, Head of the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Serbia, talked about UN activities in areas of interest to the Ministry of Defence. The Development Partnership Framework until 2020 was presented to define future cooperation.
Minister Djordjevic pointed out that cooperation with the UN and its specialized agencies and bodies is of great importance for the continuation of the reform process to which the Ministry of Defence is truly devoted, which is especially important for our country's progress towards full EU membership.
Minister Djordjevic thanked the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Serbia for the offered support for the implementation of the CASM project, whose total value is estimated at over 11 million dollars. Serbia established CASM Program with its partners in the UN and the OSCE back in 2011 with the aim to ensure a sustainable regional stability in these parts, reduce the proliferation of ammunition by reducing inventories and safe destruction of surplus and the potential risk to the local community and the environment.
The defence minister stressed that the CASM programme achieved significant results, particularly highlighting the destruction of 161 tons of napalm powder in Sweden, disassembly of ammunition filled with white phosphorus and its phased transportation to the location for destruction in Spain, which is underway, as well as improving the technical capacity of the Technical Repair Facility in Kragujevac.
At the meeting, they also noted that the cooperation between the Ministry of Defence and the UNDP and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) was valuable for the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) for the implementation of UNSC Resolution 1325 - Women, Peace and Security in the Republic of Serbia.
The preparation for the adoption of the new NAP to be implemented from 2016 to 2020 is underway. By adopting this document, our country reaffirms its commitment to recognizing the importance of equal participation of men and women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts and the promotion of a culture of permanent and sustainable peace, to achieve gender equality standards.
We are ready to share our experience and knowledge in this area with others, with the aim of comprehensive improvement of the overall capacity of the United Nations for preserving peace and security in the world, Djordjevic said.
